The condom is a must when it comes to sexual health. Available in two categories, one internal and one external – the latter being largely more used than the former – its use goes back to time immemorial since one finds traces of it as far as the ancient Egypt and through many cultures around the world. It is starting from the 18th century that its use becomes widespread. While it was originally made from animal membranes, the condom was progressively made of rubber in the 19th century and then synthetic latex in the 20th century. The condom therefore has a rich history and is now common throughout the world. However, despite the information available about the various STIs, its use raises questions that are not self-evident at all times. While important awareness campaigns took place in the 90s, STIs are now making a comeback with an increase in reported cases in recent years. Moreover, talking about the issues surrounding condom use cannot be done without taking into account the peculiarities of the populations concerned. Thus, whether it is a question of young people, sex workers, marginalized or vulnerablepeople, the issues vary and require adapted policies. All these issues make condom use a subject that is always relevant for scientific research.
