Trigger warnings are generally written elements that alert people to potentially disturbing or violent content in a work. Trigger warnings emerged with advances in post-traumatic stress disorder research and were initially used in the mainstream media to alert people about the potentially traumatic nature of certain films, news stories or television programs. Now widely used, trauma alerts are nevertheless a matter of debate, particularly in universities. While those opposed to them consider that this type of message censors and infantilizes students, those in favor of their use believe that it is an indispensable prerequisite for an inclusive education, and taking the traumas of everyone into account . Empirical research has been conducted over the past decade to determine the usefulness of trauma-informed education. According to the available studies, despite the original good intentions, their impact is only marginal, with no real useful nor harmful effects. Believing in the protective aspect of these warnings sometimes increases anticipatory stress, but does not particularly affect the anxiety felt when reading difficult texts or viewing violent images. However, as some chapters in the book Trigger Warnings. History, Theory, Context, edited by Emily Knox (2017) show, trauma warnings can sometimes be useful in that they promote caring for certain vulnerable individuals and groups by encouraging safe teaching methods based on trust. The purpose of this review is to examine the research on this sensitive but timely topic.
