Feminist pornography emerged as a new type of pornography in the 1980s, in response to the production of mainstream pornography and its increasing popularity. This review will focus on what qualifies certain productions as ‘feminist pornography’, including its goals and characteristics of its users. Feminist pornography is considered a subtype of ethical pornography, which holds itself accountable for protecting the rights and safety of its actors. It goes further by including women in the production of pornography andis devoted to representing women’s pleasure and diversifying available sexual representations. Another consideration of what constitutes feminist pornography relies on a two-part criteria of content (what is represented) and context (who is using it and why). Authenticity is often discussed in the literature on feminist pornography and can be applied to several concepts: the casting of diversified and realistic bodies, the creation of scenarios centered on women’s fantasies through a woman’s point of view, and the depiction of real orgasms. Feminist pornographers therefore appear intent to produce exciting content that is also subversive of gender norms and heteronormativity. Studies have used content analysis to describe the types of sexual practices that are seen in this type of pornography. Moreover, authors are prudent in defining the audiences of feminist pornography. Do people who self-identify as feminists choose feminist pornography as a result of their beliefs, or does their pornography use precede adherence to feminist values? In all cases, the emancipatory and educative potentials of feminist pornography are examined and questioned under various angles through this review.
