Most of the time, when we think about sextortion, it’s when a threat to share content of a sexual nature is made (i.e., exposing intimate pictures). However, sextortion isn’t just about sharing sexually explicit content; in this case, Jo is committing an act of sextortion by threatening to reveal confidential information relating to your sexual orientation.

Manipulation, blackmail, and extortion under the pretext of revealing confidential information relating to one’s gender identity, sexual orientation, HIV status, sexual practices, and others, are all considered acts of sextortion.

Cybersextortion VS sextortion?

Sextortion generally takes place online, typically on social media, in messaging applications, or on video game platforms (cybersextortion), but sextortion can also take place in the physical world.
Sextortion in the physical world is manifested through various means, but it is often carried out by someone in a position of authority, such as in the workplace. Also, sexual corruption-type sextortion is widespread in some countries where access to certain public services is denied without the exchange of sexual favours.
