Project Summary

We Lead is a Canada-wide project led by the Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC), in collaboration with three community-based partner organizations: Chroma (New Brunswick), the Queer and Trans Health Collective (Alberta), and Les 3 sex* (Quebec).

This multi-year project, running through 2027, is grounded in a collaborative, community-based approach. Members of 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities are not only the intended beneficiaries of the project鈥檚 activities; they are also invited to work alongside healthcare and service providers to develop interventions that reflect the realities and needs of their communities. In Quebec, an incubator committee composed of fifteen participants actively contributes to the project鈥檚 discussions and resource development. Throughout the project, these participants work closely with the Les 3 sex* team to help identify the real health-related needs of queer communities.

The project aims to promote more equitable access to gender-affirming care and sexual and reproductive health care (SRHC) by strengthening:

  • the capacity of healthcare and service providers to deliver culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful care;
  • the ability of 2S/LGBTQIA+ community members to navigate the healthcare system.

As part of the project, Les 3 sex* is developing two key resources:

  • A community resource tool designed to improve access to information about sexual health, reproductive health, and gender-affirming care services available across Quebec, this tool will support trans and non-binary people aged 14 and older in navigating their healthcare journeys.
  • A training program for healthcare professionals with the objectives of this training are to:
    - equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to provide inclusive, safe, and affirming care to trans and non-binary people;
    - increase awareness of the specific health needs and lived realities of trans and non-binary communities;
    - encourage critical reflection on professional practices, biases, and systemic barriers within the healthcare system.

Project Phases

The project is implemented through four main phases

The first phase focuses on engaging national and regional partners and establishing regional cohorts to identify priority issues related to access to gender-affirming care and sexual and reproductive healthcare for 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.聽鉁

The second phase involves the development and adaptation of interventions and resources tailored to the identified needs of both healthcare providers and community members.聽鉁

The third phase consists of implementing these interventions and resources across the participating regions. (In progress)

The final phase focuses on evaluating project activities, identifying promising practices, and sharing knowledge to support the ongoing improvement and sustainability of project outcomes. (In progress)
