During a 2017 study of 2,021 adults in the United States, 10% of women and 18% of men reported having ever engaged in a threesome. According to another 2018 study,  95% of men and 87% of women reported fantasizing about such a practice. Often treated as a (stereotypical) fantasy involving one man and two women – resulting ina caricatured version of bisexualities – would the threesome be condemned to be nothing more than a heteronormative fantasy? Nothing is less certain when one takes the time to look into this subject. Surprising as it may seem, scientific research has not left this subject unexplored and has looked into this practice and this fantasy. Beyond its supposedly unusual nature, its study can inform us about gender relations, our relationship with our fantasies, and sexuality as a whole. As part of our call for testimonies on plural relationships, we propose today a scientific review on sexual relationships involving three people, also called "threesome".
