BDSM (for Bondage-Discipline, Domination-Submission and Sadomasochism) is a set of sexual practices, but also plays on power relationships and fetishes, which are more widespread than we think. If the Fifty Shades series of films and novels has drawn the attention of the media and the general public to the practice of BDSM – although these have been criticized – these practices are by no means new. Often simplistically presented as sexual practices aimed at inflicting pain, BDSM is actually a set of actions and ways of being that play on the dynamics of power, domination and submission. Some fetishes are also added to it, such as the one related to latex. BDSM is therefore a complex subject, and the issues surrounding it are numerous. Communication and respect for the contract between those involved are two pillars of BDSM practitioners, with self-awareness through a deliberate exchange of power. However, education about sexuality and consent is essential, especially for young people entering into this sexuality. Issues of stigma and sexual health – which are often overlooked in sexuality education policies – are also fundamental issues for those who practice BDSM. This review will therefore focus on research on BDSM and its derivatives.
