According to the concept of intersectionality – developed by the United-statian academic Kimberlé Crenshawn in 1989 – forms of domination, oppression and discrimination should not be studied separately but, on the contrary, analyzed in terms of the links that are created between them. The elements of categorization and distinction of individuals, such as gender, sexual orientation, religion, skin color or social class, are not compartmentalized from one another but must be analyzed in the areas where they intersect. The contribution of this concept when we are interested in the problem of racism takes all its meaning. Racism, when studied from an intersectional perspective, impacts many areas, including sexuality. Intersectional approaches to discrimination show that women, people of sexual and gender diversity, and neurodivergent people are more likely to be discriminated against than others. These discriminations do not only take place in spaces labeled as heterosexual but are also found in LGBTQ+ communities. For example, bi and gay racialized men regularly experience racism, especially on dating apps and sites. While racism is a major problem, it is not just one of discrimination. Indeed, its consequences also impact the health and well-being of Black people who, for example, find themselves at greater risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection. Black women identifying to sexual minorities are also triply marginalized because of their race, gender, and sexual orientation, which impacts their reproductive health and sexual well-being. As part of Black History Month, this review will therefore focus on the connections between racism and sexuality as it relates to Black people.
